Sebastian Junger's Community

The official Sebastian Junger community

Forums, provided by the hard work of someone and dedicated to a specific cause are normally moderated - and have a 'report' button for posters to report abuse by trolls, should the moderator not catch them...(and for people like me, a spell checker is really, but really, helpful ;o)

We know what trolls are: disrupters who have no honest intent of discussion - but only to unload their vitriol and smears.

Forums are not free-for-alls. Case in point, the troll (Eric) who, from the safety of his keyboard, spews his warped vision of WAR and warriors...while enjoying the freedoms so bitterly won by those he, in his unwarranted view of his intelligence, rails against. (His diabtribe is out of place here and especially unwelcome on this weekend. )

If allowed, such trolls will take over this forum and that would be a great injustice to our troops and to Sebastian and Tim, who have sacrificed and braved much to bring this story to us back home.

If these pontificating trolls want to spew their ignorance, let them start their own forum. They have that freedom, thanks to our troops of yesterday, today and ever on, as long as there is evil in the world.

(Or better yet, let them do what Sebastian and Tim - and our troops did - and then write from experience, rather then off the top of his head. the difference between theory and reality is a wide, deep chasm.)

There's no place here for the John Kerry soldier haters. NEVER AGAIN,

Marion,

I appreciate your defense of this community and I understand perfectly where you're coming from. However, my opinion is that censorship isn't an answer in this instance. I don't agree with Eric; I don't think his arguments were well thought-out and I believe he was personalizing his attacks, which was wrong. Instead of reading the material and debating intelligently, he did a lot of cutting and pasting of various websites.

That said, I've seen real trolls tear through forums before and he doesn't strike me as one of those. He may prove me wrong in the future, but for now he's just a guy with an opinion we don't happen to much like.

People can disagree and that's okay. We need to have enough faith in what we believe that we aren't threatened or upset by other points of view. People should be passionate about what they believe, even if they don't believe exactly as we do.

Obviously there are certain concepts which violate the terms of participation of this network, but I don't think we're there yet. I think a lot of people have now had a chance to speak their minds about Eric's posts and he hasn't retaliated with anything else inflammatory. I'm not defending his arguments, only his right to make them. My politics are complex and sometimes case-by-case, but I doubt I fit anyone's definition of a conservative. I don't want to have to worry about the next thing I write offending you or anyone else to the point where I am banned from the site. I'm not sure why Eric came here or what he thought would be gained, but from my point of view this isn't an enormous deal. It's disrespectful and ignorant, but hey, welcome to the Internet, right?

Thanks for your concern, Marion but mouse stole the words out of my mouth. I agree completely.

We will tolerate differing points of view but we won't tolerate trolls or personal attacks.

Eric had points that many of us disagree with but it was a healthy debate and he didn't personally attack Sebastian.

You took the words right out of my mouth, as well, sweetheart.
