Sebastian Junger's Community

The official Sebastian Junger community

I am all sorts of jacked up about seeing Restrepo and I just saw on Facebook that they are going to be doing a free screening at the National Geographic Society and a Q&A with Sebastian and Tim. I submitted my name and I hope I am chosen to attend. Anyone else planning to attend?

I am so excited about seeing the events from the book unfold on the screen. Will be interesting to also see the soldiers and see if they are as I imagined them to be. I really think it's pure genius that Junger wrote a book that has a documentary to go along with it.

Not to continually gush about this book but, as many good books do, it has ruined me for other books at the moment. I'm trying to read "No True Glory" (about the battle of Fallujah) and I'm having a tough go. It's a good book and full of awesome detail but it just doesn't read the same.

Hi, Rhonda,

While we might not see eye-to-eye on various aspects of the wars themselves, we are in complete agreement about this book and the soldiers! I've read it 3 times, and I, too, feel like it's ruined me for other books. That said, you might find the following books worthy of your reading energy -- THE GOOD SOLDIERS by David Finkel; LONE SURVIVOR by Marcus Luttrell (he is referenced in the beginning of WAR); HORSE SOLDIERS by Doug Stanton; and the one I'm currently reading, BLACK HEARTS (it's so freakin' intense) by Jim Frederick. In all honesty, I personally haven't found the same depth of emotion in any of them that I found in WAR, which is why I keep coming back to WAR; but all of the above are extremely well-written and worthy of your time.

I think it's important to say that regardless of how people may feel about the wars in the larger context, it doesn't diminish the unconditional support I (and many other thinking people) have for our fighting men and women and I know I need to support them 150% to the best of my ability in any way I can. I started sending care packages a few months ago, and I will continue to do so, because it's what I can do, and what I must do.

Go Jill, you rock! Couldn't have said it better.

Going to amazon now to order Black Hearts, on your rec.

Well I hope you get selected. I just got my invitation today and I'm very excited.

I put in to attend, probably going to have to be medicated. I am bringing my wife if selected so she can see what it was like. I am the OEF VI generation Sky Soldier and fought in Paktikia (Sharana, Jani Khel, Kushmand, Barmel, Sar Howzeh) and Northern Kandhahar (Shah Wali Khot, Dohab, Chenar )
