My boyfriend has been serving in Afghanistan and in early July he and his buddies wound up "adopting" three stray puppies that were almost run over by a military vehicle. Soldiers are not technically allowed to have pet animals at the base, so for a while they were concerned that the dogs would be either euthanized or shot. A group is working with them to get the dogs vaccinated, neutered, and flown to the U.S. because my boyfriend's friends want to adopt the dogs at the end of their deployment. It turns out that it is prohibitively expensive to fly a dog from Afghanistan to JFK, though. Does anyone have any idea how they can finance this thing? It apparently costs $2K to $3K per dog and none of them have that kind of money. They can't attract too much attention because of the official sanctions against soldiers having pets. I think it would be terrible for the dogs to be euthanized or shot because they really boosted morale at the base, and I think they helped my boyfriend and his friends feel less lonely and homesick.

They can turn out to be great pets and excellent companions, the only difference is you did not bond with the dog in Afghanistan and during your deployment.
I hope you find a solution to your problem.
