The official Sebastian Junger community
This is my first post here and I must say I am a huge fan of Sebastian Junger's work (Restrepo, War, Fire).I have been reading a lot of books about this (Michael Herr, Dispatches was my most recent read) and I am currently playing around with the idea of being a correspondent. I worry about wanting to go into it for the right reasons (trying to do something beneficial and not just for the adrenaline rush or cool stories for the grandkids, etc.). I guess what I am looking for is advice on how to get involved the right way, or some advice (from anyone who has any experience at all) as to how you might know this is a path for you. Thanks!
Hi Chris -
Thank you for reading my work...my advice to people starting out is they really just have to save up some money, get some gear (sleeping bag, video camera, vest, etc) and just go. No one will send you at this point but if you go, you'll start to get work. Kabul, Cairo, Beirut, wherever, just base yourself somewhere and hang out with other freelancers and keep talking to the networks, etc and gradually they'll start taking video and reports from you. freelance radio (you call in with 30 second voice spots) are particularly easy. Good luck -
