Hey Misha,

I attended a book talk by Sebastian at Powell’s Friday night with Karen and your folks. I briefly chatted with Sebastian before he gave his talk. I asked him a few stupid questions to pass the time. He looked really nervous, so I tried to keep things light. I felt dumb not knowing much about his documentary, but it wasn’t like the guy was going to remember me after the night anyway.

I started reading Junger’s book yesterday, and I just finished reading the first section “Fear”. I have to say, I’ve never read a book about a person, I knew, prior to publication. It’s kind of weird. For instance on page 15, Junger describes you, two soldiers and a medic traveling to Rome. Apparently you and you’re your buddies were hammered after cleaning out a café’ car and Junger referenced you as saying something about you wanting to put a saddle on a miniature zebra and ride it around. I laughed when I read that, not because you said something completely asinine, but rather because I know you’re very fond of miniature horses (sober), and for you to want to ride a miniature zebra drunk cracks me up!
I was very sorry to read/hear about Juan Restrepo’s passing. Junger describes his death on page 59 in detail. As a reader it was hard to stomach.

Karen tells me you are headed back to Afghanistan soon. I guess my question for you is this, when your home do you quietly crave being a soldier and wish you could be back in your platoon living each minute as if it were your last, or has being home and reaccelerating to civilian life with your new bride sobered you? Are you relieved to be home?

Misha, I am 15 and loved the movie Restrepo. You were my favorite character and by far the coolest dude in the platoon. Could you send me an email at alex.russell021996@gmail.com about the experience because I wan't to join the army.
