I believe it was Giap (now 100 years old, I heard on NPR), who, when an American general remarked, "...you know, you never defeated us in battle...", replied "...we never had to...". The meaning of that statement by Giap is very clear in the transcript here. Their strategy was as much political and social as military

...with a keen eye on what was happening back in the US. I was of the generation that saw it every night on TV. near the end, Life magazine devoted an entire issue to nothing but pictures of the young men - and a few young women - who had been killed the previous week. It was not a thin issue, either. Many pages, nothing but pictures and names, and as I recall no text at all. Could not have spoken more loudly, very powerful. For what? Read "Matterhorn" for a first person view of the utter futility.
