If you want to read an AMAZING book, check out Captive, by Jere Van Dyk (Henry Holt, 2010.) The book was just released...Van Dyk tried to walk across the border into Pakistan and use his old contacts among the Mujehadin to report on the Taliban. He was taken prisoner by them insread and held for a many weeks while they decided whether to kill him or not. What this reporter lived through is, I think, pretty much the most frightening thing a journalist could be subjected to. He wrote a phenomenal book about it that I consumed in about a day. Please read it. This was during 2008, when I was just twenty miles away in the Korengal.

I finished "Captive" last week and I must say it is an excellent read. I believe the two books compliment each other perfectly.

Dear Mr. Junger,

You wrote in War that "there is a profound and mysterious gratification to the reciprocal agreement to protect another person with your life." Here is what I think that gratification arises from: For possibly the first time in these mens' lives, they are important and strong; important and strong enough that other men trust them with their lives, so very important that other men are willing to die to protect them.

Where else in their lives have they felt that? Where else in society can they experience that significance and meaning now?

Finished CAPTIVE as few days ago. It was enlightening and at the same time disturbing. It honestly started to turn my mind around a little about Islam. I admit to not knowing much about it before. Once I put myself in Jere's shoes, I was able to understand his motives and thinking better. But I did have to open my mind some to grasp everything that the author wanted to convey. That is not a bad thing.
