A letter from The Milton Margai School for the Blind, in Sierra Leone

There are many wonderful condolence letters and memories of Tim at www.timhetherington.org -- but none moved me so much as this one, from Barbara Davidson at the Milton Margai School in Sierra Leone.   I never knew about this chapter in Tim's life, and it gives an intimate look at a side of Tim few of us knew.   Long live the memory of "Uncle Tim."

20th April 2011

To the Family of Tim Hetherington

I am writing on behalf of the pupils and staff of the Milton Margai School for the Blind to express our profound sympathy and condolences to you. It was indeed a real shock to hear that Tim was killed yesterday. ‘Uncle’ Tim as he was known to everyone here at the school was so loved by everyone he came into contact with here in Sierra Leone, especially here at the school. He was indeed a kind, honest and gentle man. I know he was so dedicated to his work and this was evident by his sincere interest in the people he interviewed and photographed. Whether they were small children or leaders of countries, he treated everyone with the same genuine respect. He was a very good friend to have around you. I and everyone here will sorely miss him. Please know that our love and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
