Dear Sebastian,
My name is Gastone, I was born in 1962, I got a beloved wife whose name is Daniela, and I'm going to Afghanistan next may to spend a few weeks with our paratroopers in Bala Murghab...
Coincidences. I'm not a journalist, anyway, but a history teacher (Byzantium) and a military historian, preparing a book on guerrilla warfare and western military thought.
I'm going to give a lecture in Verona on february, 9th, organized by our Army. I'll speak about your "War", which I consider a true masterpiece.
Thanks a lot for what you did. And - do you know if someone is going to translate "War" in Italy?
Good luck and best wishes.
Gastone

Dear Gastone -

Thank you very much...and best of luck to you in Afghanistan. You will have an incredible experience. I'm glad you liked the book. You might also like the film I made, called 'Restrepo,' about the same unit that i was with. It is easy to buy online. As for Italy, I dont think the rights have sold in that country, unfortunately. It is in French, German and Spanish, however.

Best,

Sebastian

Great you found the time to answer me.
Next week I have a meeting with my editor (Mondadori), and I'll suggest to buy your "War".
I'm ordering "Restrepo" ASAP...
Wish you all the best
G.

I was wondering the same about "War" being translated into Italian...I bought a copy on post in Vicenza on Christmas Eve and I had read it twice by new year's eve...best book I've ever read, of course che emotional side linked to the fact that I was actually involved in all of the 173rd deployemnts played its part, but "War" remains an amazing book, that made me laugh and cry at the same time. The prose is perfect too. I brought it with me to Iraq on my last trip there and left my copy to some soldiers who seemed very interested in it, as it should.

Thank you for your work, Sebastian.

Hi!
I spoke with my contact at "Mondadori", urging them to buy "War" and have it translated, and he promised he'll read the book ASAP, but in the same time told me he doesn't think the italian market could be receptive enough on the topic... I wonder why, but maybe he knows better, we're only a little sad and ridicule ( these days) province of the empire, more interested in Berlusconi's "love" affairs than in world's big issues. I'll let you all know if something's developing. By the way, I bought "Restrepo": great, but a little bit difficult to understand aal what is said by the grunts... My english is good, but that good...

Gastone, I had the same thought about the receptiveness of the Italian market. Our (military) cultures are so very different and many in Italy are extremely "suspicious" about the military establishment in our Country, not to mention about the war in Afghanistan and the fact that we cannot even call it by its name - War, but rather "stabilization/security operation"....with all the consequences that this definition brings.

However this book gives such an insight on war in general in a holistic approach and on "how soldiers really live it", that I am confident a great share of the italian public could actually appreciate - not to mention that very few italians know that there are these kind of soldiers stationed in our Country. I was glad to see that the news concerning SSGT Giunta's Medal of Honor  received some attention by the Italian media, but I'm sure a lot more can be done.

Dear Elena, I do entirely agree with you - really I couldn't have said it better! I hope my editor will share our views... I 'll let you know! Best wishes, G.
